Lokahi Pacific, a Maui Community Development Organization, celebrated the opening of the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Pono Center on Thursday, September 6, 2007 at its newly constructed location at 62 N. Market Street in Wailuku. Guests included Senator Roz Baker, Representative Mele Carroll, and of course Jo-Ann Ridao, former Managing Director of Lokahi Pacific and grandmother to Jrew Kupono "Pono" Viela in which the Center is named after.
"We are absolutely delighted to be officially opening The Center. The community's support in this endeavor, the first of its kind for Maui, has been fabulous and we appreciate the hard work of the County of Maui, Corporate Sponsors, community, staff, volunteers and of course , the Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Foundation, for their tremendous support to make this vision become a reality"' says Kamaile Sombelon, Executive Director. "Jo-Ann made incredible strides during her 35 years of employment at Lokahi Pacific. We felt it only fitting that we named this special Center after her late grandson, Pono."
With a dedication program set in the Courtyard of the new Pono Center with emcee Tom Blackburn-Rodriguez, over 200 guests enjoyed hula by Kumu Hula Uluwehi Guerrero's Halau Kauluokala, supportive speeches by Senator Roz Baker, John Anderson, Executive Director of Na Hale O Maui, and Chef Ralph Giles, owner of Soup to Nuts, a new Business Incubator tenant, along with a very thankful speech from Executive Director, Kamaile Sombelon. Rev. Robb Kojima performed the Dedication Ceremony and traditional maile untying by Lokahi Board Chairman Jeff Ellison and Jo-Ann Ridao. Festive pupus were enjoyed by all courtesy of one of the Center's new tenants, Café O' Lei.
The Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Pono Center is Lokahi Pacific's second community facilities development project in Wailuku. The venture is an urban revitalization property development project with a unique mixed-use design including Lokahi Pacific Business Incubator, Affordable Rental Housing, Promenade Café by Café O' Lei, and a Commercial Kitchen.
With goal-oriented vision and broad collaboration, Lokahi Pacific develops sensible and successful projects that enrich the economic climate of the county, increase the inventory of affordable and special needs housing and insures that residents participate in that enrichment and share in its benefits.
